A Known Unknown Shipwreck

Τhe Nissia Shipwreck, dated to the 18th century, lies on a sandy seabed at a depth of -28 metres, surrounded by poseidonia fields. The main visible features of the site before any excavation took place were three cannons, and several exposed half-deteriorated timbers.

In September 2014, an excavation season was organized. One of the cannons, half-buried in an upright position was recovered.

A small trench opened in the main concentration, showed that parts of the ship’s hull were preserved under the sand.
