Mare Cyprium is a two-year project (2021-2023) conducted by the MAritime ARchaeological REsearch Laboratory (MARELab) of the University of Cyprus (UCY) and funded by the Honor Frost Foundation (HFF).
In all MARELab projects, on land and underwater, particular emphasis is given to the implementation of digital methods for data recording and mapping. 3D applications have been extensively used for the fieldwork documentation and the archaeological interpretation.
Mare Cyprium builds upon this data to create digital multimedia content, accessible to the public through this online platform. An integrated set of digital multimedia applications (DMA) are created, in an effort to promote the importance and complexity of the maritime cultural heritage of Cyprus.
A shipwreck of the Ottoman period (18th century), located off the Nissia cove, Famagusta bay, Cyprus, at a depth of 28 metres. It is the only known shipwreck of that period in Cyprus, and one of the few that are excavated in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The submerged harbour of Amathus, dated to the beginning of the Hellenistic period (end of the 4th century BCE), is among the best-preserved ancient port sites in the eastern Mediterranean.
AGIOS SPYRIDON, a 24-meter-long vessel, was one of the last wooden fishing trawlers of Cyprus. It was built in Crete in 1950 and belonged to the type of Karavoskaro. It was used as a trawler until 2004, when it was withdrawn according to EU Fishing Policy.
The MARELab has recorded six wooden Cypriot fishing boats that are representative examples of the boat types: Botis, Liberty, Trechantira and Passara.
During the KARAVOI project, 233 ship graffiti were recorded on 44 different monuments on the island (mainly churches) dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries, in an effort to study the maritime cultural landscape of medieval and post-medieval Cyprus.
